Healthcare Documentation Quality Assessment and Best Practices

The Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) and the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) released "Healthcare Documentation Quality Assessment and Best Practices" as a toolkit for the transcription sector to improve clinical documentation quality.  As their press release highlights, the two associations felt it was important to take a closer look at the quality and integrity of clinical data capture as the final rules for "meaningful use" have been released.  As EHR adoption continues to progress, much of the information which is dictated, then transcribed will end up in an EMR either as a flat file or as structured/discrete data.

Meaningful Use Criteria - Medical Transcription Response

HHS has introduced their rules pertaining to the "meaningful use" of electronic health records.  It appears that those objectives still do not recognize the importance of the structured narrative component of a patient's record, nor the ability of our medical transcription industry to deliver dictated data in a structured format through Discrete Reportable Transcription (DRT) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies.

The Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) has drafted comments on what these rules mean to the healthcare community and the transcription sector.  Please read the full document.
